PODCASTING SET UP

Where to Start With Your Podcast Room...

You have a message to tell the world, and it's has never been easier or more affordable to broadcast that message from a space in your own home. We can walk you though the steps it takes to turn your home space into a professional podcasting studio with good acoustic quality. Acoustic treatment is essential to any space that will be used to record professional audio, be it music or speech, and we have the products and expertise to make any room sound good. With custom sound panels and bass traps, we can remove harshness from your podcasting room so you can get the cleanest recordings, while also adding to your aesthetic. We can also use soundproofing materials to help isolate your space from the sounds of your home and neighborhood. We have sound solutions for all levels of podcasting/broadcasting, from hobbyists to top-tier professionals. Give us a call today and let's chat about creating your best possible audio space.

1. Acoustic Treatment (Top Priority)Before you buy any microphone or mixer, optimize your room acoustics. Clear, controlled sound starts with your environment.

Essentials:
  • Acoustic Panels (Broadband Absorbers) — Install at first reflection points (side walls, ceiling).
  • Bass Traps — In corners to tame low-end rumble.
  • Diffusers (Optional) — For larger rooms to prevent flutter echo.
  • Heavy Curtains or Soundproof Drapes — Over windows or hard walls.
  • Rugs or Carpeting — To reduce floor reflections.
Starter Tip: A small, quiet room with irregular dimensions is better than a large, square one.

2. Microphone Options
Beginner:
  • USB Mic:
    • Blue Yeti or Audio-Technica ATR2100x
    • Plug-and-play with decent quality and low setup hassle.
Intermediate:
  • XLR Dynamic Mic:
    • Shure SM58, Rode PodMic, or Audio-Technica AT2005
    • It requires an audio interface but provides better isolation and quality.
Advanced:
  • Broadcast-Level Dynamic Mic:
    • Shure SM7B, Electro-Voice RE20, Rode Procaster
    • Excellent for untreated spaces (rejects room noise effectively).

 3. Audio Interface or Mixer
Beginner:
  • USB Audio Interface:
    • Focusrite Scarlett Solo or Behringer UMC22
Intermediate:
  • Multi-Input Interface:
    • Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 or PreSonus AudioBox USB 96
Advanced:
  • Podcast Mixers/Recorders:
    • Rodecaster Pro II – All-in-one recording, mixing, effects, call-ins
    • Zoom PodTrak P8 – Portable and feature-rich

4. Headphones
All Levels:
  • Closed-back headphones (no sound bleed into mic):
    • Audio-Technica ATH-M50x
    • Sony MDR-7506
    • Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro

5. Software (DAW)
  • Beginner: Audacity (Free, easy to use)
  • Intermediate: GarageBand (Mac) or Reaper (affordable and powerful)
  • Advanced: Adobe Audition, Logic Pro X, or Hindenburg Journalist

Optional Add-ons (as you grow)
  • Mic Boom Arm – Better positioning and desk space
  • Pop Filter/Wind Screen – Reduces plosives
  • Shock Mount – Isolates the mic from desk vibrations
  • Portable vocal booth – For very reflective rooms
  • Soundproofing (not treatment) – For stopping outside noise (mass-loaded vinyl, door seals, etc.)

Final Tip: Good sound starts in the room—not with the gear. Even a $100 mic will sound amazing in a treated space, while a $500 mic will sound poor in an untreated one.
